Article: The morning and why it matters

The morning and why it matters

The morning and why it matters

Rituals matter to me and as sow-sé began to take shape I knew I wanted to create our own scent, one filled with memories that would start my day perfectly.

Our mornings are not calm. We have three children, how could it be any other way. But there are ten minutes that belong entirely to me.

I am up before them. Not by much, but enough. I open the windows first, even in winter, just for a moment, because fresh air does something to a room that nothing else quite replicates. Let our Labrador Bond out first, then to the coffee machine. Essential.

Then I spray, one or two sprays of Pieres Garden into the middle of the room. The air changes. The space feels intentional rather than accidental. It is a small thing but it is mine, and it signals to me that the day is beginning on my terms rather than everyone else's.

When we began working with Peigin from Ground Wellbeing on the scent we learned so much about the power of what we smell and how it connects us to memory. Peter and I played with many combinations but kept coming back to fig. The smell takes us straight back to summers in Portugal with my dad. That feeling was exactly what I wanted to bottle. Combined with the freshness of Peters garden became exactly what it was always meant to be. Something personal. With a Belgian mother, French was part of growing up, and I have always playfully called Peter Piere. It suits him!

Whatever your morning looks like, I hope there is something in it that is just yours. Even something small. Especially something small.

How does our garden grow

There is a quiet magic in watching a child plant a seed and wait for it. The waiting is half the lesson. A strawberry does not really come from the fridge. It comes from soil and sun and a little p...
